Summer Career Networking Style Its in the Details

Summer Career Networking Style Its in the DetailsSummer Career Networking Style Its in the DetailsFrom the boardroom to a barbecue, your personal style should shine through. When youre shaking flosses and exchanging business cards this summer, the most important thing to remember is that theres a fine line between standing out and overdoing it. From the boardroom to a barbecue, your personal style should shine through in the details without overwhelming your entire wardrobe or showing up your interviewer or colleagues. Its also important to stay cool and look cool. So keep the clothing light and to a minimum let the accents carry the day. Whether its a pair of cufflinks, a handsome briefcase, a beautiful scarf or the perfect pair of sunglasses, you will stand out because you nailed classic style with a modern twist.Use this guide to stay classic and cool in every scenario of the job search from networking to the interview.1. A formal interviewThe good news is theres not much wiggle roo m when it comes to wardrobe for the formal interview. A suit is critical. Think about dressing 5 percent to 10 percent more formal than you would before your first day at a new job. You want to look classic, not trendy. You want the focus to be on your job performance, not your wardrobe. For menLook for a two- or three-button wool suit in gray or navy. Do not wear black. A black suit looks like youre attending a funeral or driving a hearse. Wear a solid-white, light-gray or light-blue shirt, but keep in mind that white looks good against all complexions and makes your skin pop the most. Make sure half an inch of your cuff is visible. If its not, your suit sleeves are too long. Your trousers should break slightly at the hem.If you already own a suit but youre not sure about the fit, invest in a good tailor. He will be able to tell if your suit needs to be reworked or replaced. Never underestimate the importance of a properly fitted suit. The fit of the suit is everything. A slouchy su it looks sloppy.Wear a silk tie something solid, especially blue or yellow. Save red for your first day of work.Carry a proper brown or black structured leather briefcase with handles. No backpacks. No messenger bags. No duffel bags. No bags on wheels. Ever. For womenKeep it light in both fabric and color, but dont wear a white dress or suit. White is the least serious color and looks too casual. The lightest you should go is cream. If the position is less corporate, you may want to try mixing separates, like a solid sleeveless dress with a tailored jacket in a brighter color or pattern. Look for a slim-notch lapel to keep it modern.Dont be afraid to toss the suit and wear a sharp dress with a jacket. The benefit to wearing a sleeveless dress is that you can remove your jacket until right before your interview, so youll stay cooler. To create shape, cinch a skinny or chunky black belt around the jacket.A more classic skirt or pants suit paired with a pretty printed silk blouse is als o a lovely combination.Avoid statement jewelry simple hoop earrings or pearls are perfect.Avoid It bags for interviews, especially if theyre made of exotic skin or covered in hardware. Your bag should be big enough to hold all the necessities. Try an elegant leather tote in a solid classic color like tan or black.2. A job fairYoull want to dress similarly to your interview attire, but with a bit more personality to avoid getting lost in the crowd. For menSince a future employer can see you from every angle, focus on the extra details. If youre wearing a suit, lose the tie in favor of a crisp white pocket square. If you know no one else will be wearing a suit, wear a pair of dark jeansstoff jeans or tan chinos with a tucked-in dress shirt (light pink softens your face under those harsh fluorescent lights) and a sport coat with some texture pinstripe, windowpane, houndstooth or herringbone. Save your plaid suits for autumn.Wear a solid brown or black leather belt with a square buckle. Your belt should match your shoes.Newly shined brown shoes from chestnut to chocolate stand out the most. Look for round-toe shoes. (No square-toed shoes)A messenger bag is the most practical option and looks sophisticated as long as its not bulky or made of nylon. Stick with canvas or leather. For womenIts not necessary to wear a suit to a networking event, but you want to be comfortable and chic. Solid-colored trousers or pencil skirts with a wool/Lycra blend help avoid wrinkles. Keep the colors classic cream, tan, navy, black. Pair them with a patterned jacket to create a point of interest, or if youd prefer a more classic look, wear a solid jacket with a floral, bow-front or ruffled blouse underneath, which are several of the seasons trends. You could also try a three-quarter -sleeve cotton pinstripe dress shirt to give the look some texture, tucked in, with a skinny belt, simple earrings and ballet flats. As beautiful as heels can be, when youre walking around a 10,000-square-fo ot convention center exchanging business cards, its hard to smile when your feet are aching. Look for one- or two-tone flats. (Black and tan is a nice combination.)3. An informal networking eventSummer presents opportunities to network in casual locales like a dinner cruise or the roof deck of a potential employers building. Such events present a special challenge because its potentially hot outside, making it tempting to dress down or show more skin. You should leise take extra care in your wardrobe you never know whom you may end up shaking hands with. For menOn a dinner cruise, preppy and nautical styles often look best, as long as theyre not overly campy (i.e. lobster-embroidered chinos) or exaggerated (a navy blazer with brass buttons). In either situation, its okay to ditch the suit in favor of lightweight straight-leg denim (white is a nice alternative to blue jeans for summer) or khakis. You could pair your trousers with a crisp, fitted polo in a solid color or a button-down, like a blue or dark-purple check, or a light-blue contrast-collar.If youre on a boat, deck shoes without socks are appropriate if youre on a roof deck, try a pair of classic brown leather loafers or cap-toe lace-ups.For womenThe key to dressing for a cruise is that you want to look glamorous youre on a boat while remaining sure-footed. Try to avoid heels, and if youre going to wear a dress or a skirt, make sure its windproof as you dont want to risk the obvious.Infuse some color and light into your look with a pretty silk scarf or colorful lightweight wrap, or a gorgeous pair of chandelier earrings. You could also try pairing a lightweight tunic with detailing on the neckline with cream trousers and metallic flats. If youre on a roof deck, women should try to dress as they would for an early-evening cocktail gathering (below).4. Drinks after workYour friend invites you out for a few drinks with a group of people who work in your industry. Your wardrobe should remain professional wi thout making those around you feel like theyre still at the office. For menShow up wearing a suit, but take your jacket off soon after you arrive. If you work in a slightly more casual/creative field, wear dark jeans and oxfords with a button-down shirt tucked in and a belt.Wear a handsome watch. Bars are often crowded, and people notice more what youre wearing from the waist up A gorgeous brown leather belt with a square buckle, a classic-looking chronograph watch, a unique pocket square. A pinstripe shirt. Cufflinks. Even if the bar is dark, youre speaking close to people, and they will notice the details. For womenGo from day to evening with a few simple tricks that dont necessarily require changing. If youre wearing a suit, remove your jacket, add a belt, and replace your flats with heels. The most classic shoes are round or pointy and closed-toe in black, brown or cream. For a night out, you can try something strappier, like a metallic sandal.Add a little color and liveliness wit h a gorgeous statement necklace one of the major looks of the season. A statement necklace is more than just a simple strand of pearls or a pendant on a chain it is a big, bold announcement, often filling your entire neckline with sequins, stones, glass or metal. It melds with whatever youre wearing, thus becoming the outfit. Everyone from Banana Republic to Burberry designs these, so theyre not hard to find.Keep the rest of your look minimal with solid colors and minimal jewelry. Top off the outfit with a pretty beaded clutch, which will be much less bulky in a cramped bar than your tote, but can still fit your business cards.5. A baseball gameTheres nothing more casual than Americas favorite pastime. It is tempting to throw on a team T-shirt and a baseball cap, but if a colleague invites you to join her in her companys box seats, dress slightly more formally. For menCool comfort is key when you have to be on while spending the day under the hot sun or an evening in the humidity. P air straight-leg chinos with a fitted polo (stick with white since itll keep you coolest in the sun) and leather sandals. Throw on a pair of aviators to shield your eyes. For womenA cotton shirtdress, belted, with white tennis sneakers is a fun way to dress up the occasion while looking as relaxed as if you were wearing shorts and a T-shirt.Keep your accessories unfussy. Stick with the basics sunglasses, a sleek stainless-steel watch and a canvas tote.6. A backyard barbecueYouve been invited to a friends house for a midsummer barbeque, and a potential employer may be stopping by. You would look out of place if you dressed up, but you also dont want to look frumpy in his presence. For menThis is the trickiest situation possible because youre expected to behave formally but not appear formal. On a hot day, wear flat-front cotton khaki shorts that hit between the knee and mid-thigh. Anything longer looks young and sloppy. Steer clear of cargo shorts, which are bulky. A fitted polo shirt or a cotton or linen button-down is always clean and handsome.Leather sandals or clean white tennis sneakers are the best footwear option. You can wear canvas or leather flip- flops, but never rubber ones.Even though youre dressing down, dont forget the extra details - a pair of aviators and a chunky stainless-steel watch. For womenEating hot dogs and hamburgers in the sun calls for comfort. A cotton or linen sundress (as long as its not too lightweight or flimsy) that hits at the knee is a beautiful option. (Make sure to wear a nude slip underneath if there is any chance its see-through in broad daylight.) Pair with leather sandals or wedges. Cotton shorts or skirts (denim is fine) are also appropriate, and you can pair them with a light cotton T-shirt or tank top, as long as theyre not too skimpy.Keep a lightweight cardigan or shawl on hand for when it cools down.Aviator sunglasses pair nicely with shorts, while plastic frames in black or tortoiseshell feel more refined and would better complement a sundress.

And the award for worst commute goes to ...

And the award for worst commute goes to ...And the award for worst commute goes to ...Everyone has that one terrible commute story that they think is deserving of a rewardfor what they endured. In New York City - which has the countrys longest commute time- you can actually win a prize for your commuting heroism.Last week, advocates from the Riders Alliance group launched a weekly contest to determine which New Yorker had the worst subway commute to promote the reality of what 5.5 million New Yorkers suffer on the subways every single day to policymakers deciding the aging Metropolitan Transit Authoritys budget for repairs. A New York Times investigation found that the MTA had the most delays out of any major rapid transit system in the world.NYC woman wins award for worst commuteOn Tuesday, one New York City woman was crowned the inaugural Worst Commute award winner for surviving a30-minute trip that became a two-hour ordeal. Jennifer Tang, a librarian from Forest Hills, Queens, e xplained how her daily commute to work became a nightmare for her body and mind.I was in a hurry to get home and didnt use the bathroom, figuring my 30-minute commute from Manhattan to Queens wasnt going to be so bad, Tang wrote in her submission. But just one stop away from her destination, her train got stuck in the tunnel for two hours due to signal problems. Unable to use a bathroom, Tang could only wait for relief.By the time the train pulled into the 67th Avenue station, I had to run to a nearby Starbucks in order to pee, she wrote. I still have post-traumatic stress syndrome from this incident. Now, before boarding the subway, even if its for one stop, I use the bathroom before I get on the torture chamber that is the MTA subway.New York, New Jersey, Illinois have worst commute timesData shows why stories like Tangs are likely to continue in New York City. Using U.S. Census Bureau data, Business Insider ranked average commute times across 20 major American cities. At 39.9 minut es, New York City had the longest commute time. Jersey City and Newark in New Jersey came in second and third at 36.2 and 34.4 minutes. Chicagos 34.1-minute commute time average came in fourth. How commutes infect workplace attitudesBad commutes are not just an individual misery, theyre a workplace issue causing disengaged, unhappy workers. The stress of road traffic and subway delays you experience in the morning sets the tone of how youll feel for the rest of the day. In a survey of activities that made 900 participants unhappy, morning commutes were the most miserable activity, beating out working at your job or cleaning the house.Anotherrecent study concluded that a 20-minute increase in a workers round-trip commute time has the same effect on job satisfaction as a 19% reduction in income. So next time you feel crummy on your soul-sucking commute, take heart in knowing that youre not the only one finding this endurance sport unbearable.

How to stand out from the crowd when you graduate

How to stand out from the crowd when you graduate How To Stand Out From The Crowd When You GraduatePosted February 20, 2013, by Jo Messer In todays competitive job market, youll need more than just a degree to grab the attention of employers. There are thousands of graduates like you, so to really stand out in the graduate employment arena you need to be proactive and take manahme in developing your skills and experiences. What do employers really want? To start, you need to have an understanding of the different types of skills employers are looking for and, most importantly, how to develop these skills during your studies. So what exactly are the qualities employers look for? Every year, Graduate Careers Australia (GCA) surveys employers from a sortiment of industries about the skills, attributes and experience they value most in new graduates. The top 10 graduate attributes or employability skills in the 2015 Graduate Outlookwere Interpersonal and communication skills (58.3%) Cu ltural alignment/values fit (34.3%) Emotional intelligence (including self-awareness, self-regulation, self-motivation) (26.2%) Reasoning and problem-solving skills (22.6%) Academic results (19.6%) Work experience (19.1%) Technical skills (14.4%) Demonstrated leadership (13.1%) Extracurricular involvement (e.g. clubs and societies) (7.4%) Community/volunteer service (1.6%) Understanding your own employability skills To successfully communicate your employability skills to employers, you first need to understand them. Its not enough to tell an employer, I have great communication skills you need to be able to back it up with evidence. Start by analysing the skill, breaking it down into the micro-skills that make up the broader skill category. For example, think about the specific components that make up Interpersonal and communication skills (both written and oral). You will need to think of specific examples from your experience it could be assignments you have done at university, presentations in class, participation in discussions, extracurricular activities such as being a member of the debating team, or the interpersonal skills you have used in your part-time job or personal life. You might have very limited professional experience but this doesnt mean you dont have employable and transferable skills. Think about the skills that youve developed during your studies, part-time/casual work, work sitzordnungs and extracurricular activities (this could include travel and/or community involvement). For example, if you have a part-time job in a restaurant, you havent just been serving customers you have actually been developing interpersonal and communication skills, teamwork skills, customer service skills and even gaining experience in leadership when you train new staff. How do you develop your employability skills? There are a range of ways to develop your skills and you need to think about the strategies that work best for you. Identify your skill gaps and make a plan to develop the skills you require. Here are a number of different ways to kick-start this process. Work integrated learning (internships/placements/vacation work) Work integrated learning comprises internships, work placements and vacation work. It is common for universities and TAFEs to offer subjects that involve work placements and/or industry-based learning. Undertaking work experience that is relevant to your degree gives you the chance to gain insight into an occupation and industry as well as develop your professional and personal skills. Ultimately this will give you a competitive edge when applying for employment when you graduate. If you dont have professional experience as part of your studies then consider undertaking your own work experience. Contact organisationsthat you are interested in, look at industry-specific websites, speak to your lecturers and tutors and be active in your search for the right experience. Many organisations offer vacation progr ams for penultimate students during semester breaks so make sure you keep a look-out on the Graduate Opportunitiesand Unigradwebsites. Volunteering Volunteering is an excellent way to gain experience and practical skills in your area of interest. Through volunteering you can contribute greatly to an organisation and the community, and can network with a wide range of people. Employers view community involvement very positively and may even have an expectation that graduates have been engaged in their community. Go Volunteeris a national website that enables you to search for volunteer positions in your area. Leadership programs Find out what leadership programs are available through your institution. Student leadership programs assist you in developing skills and gaining confidence and are viewed positively by employers. They also help you develop professionally and often provide networking opportunities. You can also seek out leadership positions through your extracurricular activi ties, for example by joining student committees or undertaking leadership training through your part-time job or volunteer work. Keep records Its a good idea to keep a record of your skills and experience. This will help when it comes to preparing job applications, and also for interviews where you might need to give examples of your competency across a range of different skill areas. Set up a file where you can store the information in a simple format. Use the employability skills as headings and record your skills and experiences as you go. Its always a good idea to keep assignments that demonstrate specific skills. Industry experience/placement reports also provide you with a record of the skills you have developed and are competent in. It is also worthwhile keeping job descriptions as these can be useful when preparing your applications. Make sure you update your records regularly and dont limit yourself to only the key employability skills. If there is an e-portfolio option a t your university/TAFE, then make the most of it as this will make preparing employment applications much easier Networking Did you know that you are more likely to successfully find employment if you have a wider network of professional contacts? Joining professional and industry associations is a great way to network with people and find out more about your area of interest. Student memberships are generally available and offered free or at a discounted rate. Professional and industry associations can help in many ways their websites provide useful general information on the industry or profession, including labour market trends, future directions and links to other relevant sites. You can also develop your skills by attending seminars and conferences, which are a fabulous way to meet people in your industry. A list of professional associations is available at the Australian Professional Organisations, Associations and Societies. If you havent already got a LinkedIn account, its time to get one LinkedIn is like a professional version of Facebook and can be used for networking, job search and company research. Most importantly, dont underestimate your personal networks ask your family and friends if they know anyone working in your area who you could contact. Get a mentor Finding a mentor who can share their own experiences to guide you towards your career goal is one of the best things you can do. Career supervision involves a one-on-one relationship between yourself and an experienced professional who can provide you with ongoing support, encouragement and advice in regards to your career development. Find out if your institution has a mentoring program if not, then see if there is one available through a relevant professional association. Make the most of your online presence If you have a Facebook, Twitter or YouTube account, think about the information you are sharing and the message youre putting out there. Your online presence is part of your profes sional and personal brand, so only put up information that you want seen and remove anything that may undermine the image youre trying to project. The most important thing to keep in mind is that what goes online, stays online. Your social media presence can be an asset to your employability, but use it wisely. Why Being Vulnerable at Work Is a Good Thing

Why Being Vulnerable at Work Is a Good ThingWhy Being Vulnerable at Work Is a Good Thing Lets be honest No matter how successful or advanced, every pro welches once an amateur . At some point, they needed the one thing very few people like to admit they need Help.Asking for help means allowing yourself to be vulnerable, but being vulnerable goes against just about every business or professional training Ive ever received. I was taught to show everyone I was strong - that I could handle it all on my own. Yet, when I decided to move from Florida to New York, I was drowning in my own pride.Asking for help can be uncomfortable. But its important to remember that others have gone before you and have achieved the level of success you desire (or at least somewhere close to it). Theyre part of your success GPS. After all, getting from point A to B is easiest with a guide. You can activate your GPS by asking for help, whether its about business development, networking, sala ry negotiations or professional snafus.During my move to New York, I had to ask for help. It was the best decision Ive made to date. I had saved what I thought was a considerable amount of money to become a full-time entrepreneur, but after 90 days of living in NYC, I didnt have enough clients to maintain my living expenses. I was out of cash. I reached out to a sponsor and friend and, through strained tears, I explained what happened and that I needed help finding a job. She connected me to one of her contacts who was managing Disney star Zendaya Colemans new fashion line. I interviewed on a Tuesday and began as the strategic marketing director for Daya by Zendaya that following Thursday. Ive worked with the brand for mora than a year, simply because I asked for help .Asking for help requires the one thing business school doesnt teach you how to be vulnerable enough to admit you need support. These five tips will show you how to use your vulnerability to progress in your career, no matter which stage or phase of life youre in.There are three key relationships every professional should cultivate. Its difficult to ask for help if youve isolated yourself. Your success in life is directly connected to the relationships youve developed. Understand that building connections take time, so youll need to invest in these relationships before you ask for a favor. Think of these relationships as a garden. Before you can enjoy the fruit from it, youll first have to plant the seeds. These three types of relationships are game-changers for your careerIn buchen to truly ask for help and clearly articulate your needs, you have to be honest with yourself first. During my move, I had to get real I didnt have enough clients to cover my business expenses. Honestly articulating your needs allows your mentor , sponsor or fairy godparent to provide the right type of help at the right time.No one can read your mind. You will have to ask for what you need. And you will need to do it as clearly and directly as possible. First, pick up the phone, or ask to meet in person. This isnt a text conversation . Then, when you get ready to make your ask, condense it to no more than two 140-character tweets. Your mentor, sponsor and/or fairy godparent are busy people. Deciphering what you truly need takes time away from them actually helping you. Do the pre-work to ensure youre able to clearly articulate your needs.Yes, you need help, but in the spirit of being an asset to whoever you meet, always bring something of value to the relationship. In the development of each of the relationships identified above, do your homework on each person, so when you connect you can bring something of value to help them too. After your initial ask, schedule a reminder in your calendar to follow up on your request two weeks later if no progress has been made. If things have mucksmuschenstill not progressed by then, allow an additional two weeks. Be sure to include a reminder of what wa s discussed, what you need and how grateful you are for his or her time assisting you. If you still see no progression, connect with the person once a week sending helpful articles relevant to his or her industry or desires. This will keep you top of mind while serving as a reminder of what you need. If you do get the help you need, dont forget to follow up with a thank-you note that updates them on your progress. If you remember nothing else, remember this People can do a lot of things, but they cant read minds. Asking for help can be uncomfortable, yes, but your greatest growth is usually found outside of your comfort zone. When you need help, you have to say so.This article originally appeared on The Well , Jopwells digital magazine. Why you should put your laptops away in meetings

Why you should put your laptops away in meetingsWhy you should put your laptops away in meetingsAs someone who grew up with computerssince elementary school, I dont feel nostalgia for the smell of ink orthe feel of paper. But when it comes to taking notes in meetings, I try to fight the lure of my laptop too. The sirens call of my laptops distractions just make it too hard to focus.Yes, Im jotting down notes but I have also been conditioned to click immediately on pushnotifications by a lifetime of laptops and engineers designing addictive featuresthatmake us want to drop everythingand click.Im unable to resist a ping, even if the email or Slack message is something that can wait. The pen is mightier than the screenA psychology science study backs upwhy the best thing to do is to surrender and shut down our screens during meetings and lectures. A 2014 study found that university students who took longhand notes were able to retain more complex information than students taking notes on laptops. In otherbei words, even though the laptop notetakers were able to type more information than the slower longhand notetakers, that information wasnt necessarily helpful. Both longhand and computer notetakers were able to recall facts, but the longhand notetakers were much better at answering conceptual questions that required analysis, like how do Japan and Sweden differ in their approaches to equality within their societies? In these type of critical thinking questions, the computer notetakers performed significantly worse.Longhand notetakers were also better at recalling information long after the lecture was over Even when allowed to review notes after a weeks delay, participants who had taken notes with laptops performed worse on tests of both factual content and conceptual understanding, relative to participants who had taken notes longhand.Researchers believed this is because laptop notetakers are more inclined to take verbatim notes instead of writing what theyre hearin g in their own words. That hurts them. By summarizing, paraphrasing, concept mapping in their own words, the longhand notetakers were able to make deeper connections to the text than the shallower processingverbatim copying gave laptop notetakers. The optics of staring at a screen in a meetingEven when I am writing relevantnotes on a screen, Im aware that looking down at a screen and not at my colleague makes it seemas if Im not paying attention. As journalist Kim Bui wrote in her management newsletter, longhand notes not only help you focus, they also help everyone around you know that you have their undivided attention I realized people assumed when Iwas typing on my laptop that I was texting or Slack-ing. Now I only bring my phone and notebook unless Im presenting something. It signals that I am all in, totally present and relieves me of distractions (Slack). In todays pitch meeting, I did not bring my laptop, and though I felt the itch to type and I dont enjoy the look of my scragg ly handwriting, I noticed that it forced me to listen and be fully present to my colleagues.I use my laptop in every other facet of my job, but when it comes to notetaking, I concede to the superior power of paper and pen.

6 Signs of Ageism in the Workplace and How to Handle It

6 Signs of Ageism in the Workplace â€" and How to Handle It 6 Signs of Ageism in the Workplace - and How to Handle It 6 Signs of Ageism in the Workplace - and How to Best Handle It Are you ready to slow down at work and retire? We didn’t think so either. You might imagine that the modern-day workplace has left discrimination in the past century because the new wave of employers, HR managers, and employees have all been well-educated about the value of an inclusive work environment. And yet, ageism is still alive and well. What does ageism look like? A 28-year-old female CPA might be told that she is too young to be a controller. A job candidate in his 50's could hear that the company is looking for a recent college graduate with a lot of energy and no bad habits, while an employee in her 60's might be counseled out of attending an industry conference, ostensibly to allow her to take it easy this month. Although ageism can certainly cut both ways, most complaints and studies have focused on the experience of the 50+ crowd. According to AARP, 64 percent of workers have witnessed or experienced age discrimination. Even though there's been plenty of research that overturns common stereotypes about older workers, the new ways of thinking haven't been fully absorbed yet. And so, it's important to be alert for signs of ageism and to know your options if you or someone in your family experiences age-based discrimination in the workplace. What is ageism anyway? The best place to start is with some legal background. The Age Discrimination Employment Act (ADEA) was passed in 1967. From that point on, age has been one of the protected characteristics in the workplace, which means employers cannot discriminate against employees based on their age. This includes hiring, firing, work assignments, and promotions. As a side note, it's important to know that this legal protection doesn't cover employees of smaller companies because businesses with fewer than 20 employees are exempt from the ADEA. The intent of the legislature may have been clear-cut, yet real-life applications are anything but. For example, imagine an accounting department at an insurance company. The department is run by a female accounting manager who's 30 years old. One of the staff accountants, Joann, is 62 and has been with the insurance company for over 25 years. Another staff accountant is a brand-new college graduate named Josh who has been with the company for a year and a half. Now, imagine that the performance review cycle rolls around. Joann gets average and below-average marks with a standard company-wide cost of living (COL) salary increase. Josh gets high-performance marks, the same COL increase, a performance bonus, and a promotion to accounting lead. Is this age discrimination? Not necessarily. It's possible that the young accounting manager has negative stereotypes about older employees, but it's also possible that the outcome had nothing to do with age and that Josh's performance was simply stronger than Joann's. The manager may have observed that Joann makes repetitive mistakes, is resistant to changing her account reconciliation format to match the new standard that's been rolled out earlier in the year, and has also missed several important deadlines. On the other hand, Josh may have gone to great lengths to get his work done on time. He may have taken the initiative to meet with professionals outside his department to understand and resolve reconciliation issues that had been lingering since before he joined the company or even volunteered to take on additional work when another accountant was out sick for a week during the year-end close. This example wasn't chosen to imply that there is no such thing as age discrimination, but rather to emphasize that human interactions are inherently messy. In any group of professionals, it's virtually impossible to have two individuals with the exact same performance. People's contributions to the company vary from person to person (and even for the same person over the course of several years). And, like it or not, we all automatically notice and recognize other people's age as we interact with them. Age distinctions and performance differences aren't the problem but in order to have an inclusive workplace, it's important to separate the two. What does ageism in the workplace look like? Most hiring managers and HR professionals would tell you that there is no ageism in their company, but reality isn't this straightforward. It's possible for age discrimination to go completely unnoticed. It's also possible that benign behaviors might seem like ageism to older employees. In other words, don't assume that you are in the clear because you work at a forward-thinking company, but also, just because something feels like ageism doesn't make it so. Here are a few examples of what age discrimination might look like: Learning opportunities are automatically offered to younger employees not older ones. This can include educational coursework, access to reimbursement for continuing education, professional or industry conference attendance, etc. Being overlooked or passed over for challenging assignments. This may also look like an unfair share of unpleasant or tedious assignments given to older employees. Being left out of client meetings or company activities. A spoken or unspoken assumption that you are not entitled to take time off for family commitments because you don't have young kids at home. Disparaging comments and remarks about age. This could be framed as subtle and playful, with others joking about your age, retirement plans, slow typing speed, gasping for breath while coming up the stairs, etc. Or, it could be downright aggressive (e.g. pointed and/or cornering comments that pressure you to retire and free up the position for another professional). Being passed over for raises and promotions. As in our example above, this one can get tricky. Different raises and promotion decisions may indicate age-based discrimination, or they might be a reflection of individual performance. What's the best way to deal with ageism in the workplace? Step one: Don't assume that you or your workplace are 100 percent immune to age discrimination. Our brains work by relying on established stereotypes for faster processing and decision making. Learn to recognize your own thinking patterns. Challenge your assumptions. If you see signs of ageism that aren't directed at you, don't distance yourself by thinking that this could never happen to you. If you have experienced this, or if you worry about that as a possibility, here's how to deal with ageism in the workplace: Invest in your continued growth and development. Read, stay up to date on trends and best practices, and push yourself to do better every year. Get a mentor, whether within your current company or outside, who is dedicated to supporting your success. Make a commitment to fight the stereotype of an aging professional who is uncomfortable with change and technology, low on energy, and coasting without ambition. Today's older workforce is a wealth of industry and institutional knowledge. However, there's value in not launching into stories about the good old days. Don't be the one to bring up your age as the reason why your boss should take it easy on you. Don't fall into a belief that your workplace owes you something for your past contributions. Don't buy into age stereotypes your own thinking can affect how you act. Project the same level of polish and professionalism as your younger colleagues. Perhaps you are feeling secure in your position as an established contributor, but that's no reason to falter in doing your best to represent your company. Related:Want to Get Promoted at Work? Here's How to Boost Your Chances of Success Finally, if you do experience signs of age discrimination, take detailed notes; write down the dates and the names of witnesses to conversations. Reach out to an employment attorney who can assess your situation and advise you on next steps. Just like your younger colleagues, keep your network active and your options open. Spend some time each year updating your resume and your online profiles; make sure to follow the most current standards so as to not date yourself. At the end of the day, the best way to prevent yourself from falling victim to age discrimination is to stay on top of your career game. Need to update your resume just in case? Quantum Levitation Goes Viral

Quantum Levitation Goes Viral Quantum Levitation Goes Viral Coat a sapphire disk with a few microns of superconducting ceramic, drop it over some magnets, and watch it float. The seeming miracle is the result of quantum trapping. That and the hard work of some researchers at Tel Aviv University. Levitation was once relegated to the realms of mystic texts and mountain top yogis. No longer. Thanks to researchers at Tel Aviv University, Israel, objects in our time can float comfortably in the air, gliding through it friction free or hovering as motionless as a bronze cast of Saint Joseph of Cupertino. The objects in question are no air hockey pucks, nor are they the finicky, gyroscopic magnets of yester-decades Levitron. Were talking superconductorshigh-transition temperature superconductors. In avideo clipnow floating all over the Internet, Dr. Boaz Almog, a researcher with Tel Avivs High Tc Superconductivity Group, can be seen placing a small disk over a magnetic track. There it remains, in whatever orientation he leaves it, centimeters away from the magnets. It does not fly off to the side, repelled by the magnetic field, nor does it skate about willy-nilly when released. When Almog adjusts the disks attitude to a rakish angle, it stays put till touched again. When hit with a flick of a finger it glides over the magnets as if friction were a property of some other universe. The disk hovers above the magnets. To make the magic happen, Almog and his compatriots,Professor Guy Deutscher and Mishael Azoulay, coated a sapphire disk, the thickness of a business card or two, with a few microns of yttrium barium copper oxide. This ceramic goes superconductor at a mere negative 301F. Sounds chilly, to be sure, but its a good 100 degrees warmer than physicists thought was the limit back in the 1980s. In fact, 301 is balmy enough that a good dose of liquid nitrogen can whip the YBCO into superconductivity. When properly cooled, superconductors do their conducting with zero resistance. They also become averse to all magnetic fields. Usually thats a deal killer for any magnet/superconductor relationship. But thanks to the thinness of Almogs disk, a magnetic field can enter it here and there in the form of flux tubes. Where they penetrate the disk, superconductivity is locally destroyed. The magnetic field has holes in it and the superconductivity circulates around them, pinning them, and the disk, in place. The effect is strong enough that the disk can hover five centimeters above the magnets, a world record for levitation of superconductors, says Almog. The magnetic field penetrates in the form of quantum flux tubes. The phenomenon is made possible, in part,by the groups initial ignorance of how to grow a superconducting layer. They used a buffer between the YBCO and the sapphire that was thought to be inferior by other researchers. Though their buffer material is less compatible with YCBO than the more common buffer material, it allowed them to grow a thick, mechanically strong, and crack-free film. It was pure accident, says Almog. We had thisbuffer material laying in our lab and we thought, What the hell, lets use it. Does all this mean well soon be commuting to work on personal quantum levitating hovercrafts? Someday. Maybe. In principal it would be possible to levitate very heavy objects, says Almog. If you could stretch our technology to the edge and grow tens of microns of superconductor with a one meter surface you could have a very strong levitationyoud have to pave your road with magnets. Will it be economical? Im not sure. What, then, does one do with a levitating superconductor? I hoped that from this exposure, someone one would suggest an application, says Almog. But it didnt happen. Until someone thinks of something, the piece will remain a curio (one soon available for play in Lancaster, PA, at the North Museum of Science and Natural History. The museum bought one from Almog after he gave a demonstration there). Once again, we have to put our hovercraft dreams in suspension. Michael Abrams is an independent writer. In principal it would be possible to levitate very heavy objects. Will it be economical? I’m not sure. Dr. Boaz Almog, High Tc Superconductivity Group, Tel Aviv University

What the House Of Tomorrow Can Teach Us Today

What the House Of Tomorrow Can Teach Us Today What the House Of Tomorrow Can Teach Us Today Those were the adjectives that were expected to define late-20th century housing. By the middle 1980s Americans and Western Europeans were supposed to be living in white plastic Swiss crosses with windows lining the arms. Like pies on display, the houses were to be constructed on pedestals. The team that designed the Monsanto House of the Future, a Disneyland attraction from 1957 to 1967, originally set out to create their vision for an affordable home for the families flocking into the housing market following World War II. Designed and engineered by Monsanto, Marvin Goody and Richard Hamilton of MIT, and Walt Disney Imagineering, the house was envisioned as something that could be quickly and inexpensively constructed on nearly any terrain and could withstand most any force of nature, said Gary Van Zante, architecture curator at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Museum. That's not the home they finished with, and only in small part because they were working with the most popular material of their day- namely plastic- and with building techniques that hadn't yet caught up with that material, he said. In 2010, Van Zante gave a presentation on the Monsanto House of the Future. When it was completed, Disneyland visitors could tour the house of the future set in the far-off year 1986, complete with an imaginary family and futuristic household appliances such as microwave ovens. We may snicker at the retro-future, but it's something we can't escape. Projections of the future have to represent what's actually happening in the days in which they're imagined. Enhance your On-Campus Recruiting Efforts

Enhance your On-Campus Recruiting Efforts Enhance your On-Campus Recruiting Efforts Enhance your On-Campus Recruiting Efforts Shillan, MonsterCollege Marketing Manager As we move toward the spring recruiting season, MonsterCollege gathered first-hand advice for employers hiring students and recent grads for internships and entry-level opportunities.  Marianna Savoca, Director of the Career Center at Stony Brook University (SUNY), and Donna Cassel Ratcliffe, Director of Career Services at Virginia Tech University, have provided the following insight to create and sustain a successful college recruiting  season: 1)  Relationships   It’s all about relationships!  Get to know the universities on your target list.  Start with career services â€" which can provide a central and consistent point of contact and help you navigate your way through various entities, departments and student organizations that would make the best fit partners for your needs. 2)  Internships and Cooperative Education Programs All companies should create internship (single term) or cooperative education (multiple term) opportunities for college students.  This is a win-win situation. Students gain experience and exposure to the organization and to the field.  Companies can observe the promising new professionals in the workplace, thus creating a talent pipeline for hiring the best talent upon graduation. 3)  Meet with Key Campus Contacts   Prior to your efforts to recruit top talent,  meet with career services staff and faculty to discuss your hiring needs in terms of skills and knowledge required for  successfully recruiting college graduates, career paths for newly minted graduates; identify key stakeholders at the institution who will help communicate your needs to students. 4)  Campus Ambassadors Use your assets. Returning interns can be your most effective ambassadors on campus, spreading your news, marketing your brand and engaging in peer-to-peer promotion of your company brand and its opportunities. 5)  Using Social Networking Websites   Candidates are turned off by companies who seek them out over social networking websites, but a well created company fan page is worth creating.  Let the students come to you within these arenas. 6)  Send Alumni to Campus Alumni make great representatives of your company as well; consider involving them in your campus recruitment efforts. Dispatch alumni to campus to serve as greeters, interviewers, and presenters. 7)  Personalize the Process With the onset of online application requirements, it is important for employers, when possible, to take extra steps to personalize the process.  For example, for companies who do not accept resumes at job fairs, take time to talk with candidates, look at resumes, make positive comments and then refer them to the website.  Taking the extra steps to apply might not be welcomed by all students, but encouragement and a smile can go a long way to motivate. 8)  Be Upfront   Being upfront during the search process is better than leading student candidates along.  A few examples:  If a company sends representatives to job fairs, students will assume that they actually have jobs. When talking to company representatives, students would like honest feedback (suggestions) on their resumes and credentials. 9)  Keep Students in the Loop   After candidate interviews,  keep in contact with top candidates while decisions are being made. Send an email; give a call. Reaching out to students during this stage keeps student interests alive as they pursue other companies as well. 10)  Communicate Outcomes Inform career services and any faculty contacts you’ve made about the number of offers extended, number of accepts /rejects, names of new hires for both internships and full time offers;   share your perception of how the candidates performed in comparison to students from your other target schools.  Provide feedback and accept feedback. Communication is the key to maintaining not just relationships, but a true partnership with your target campuses, which will result in long term success. “These insights from campus experts are valuable and are a great benefit for employers” says Jill Bodino, Education Relations Manager for MonsterCollege. “Experts such as Marianna and Donna work with hundreds of employers each semester and truly know what works to reach top talent on-campus.” With the kickoff off of spring recruiting, use this expert insight to plan and execute a successful campus recruitment effort to meet all of your internship and  emerging workforce  hiring needs!
